Jul 9, 2026 | 9:25 AM

The Medicine Hat Mavericks dropped a 16-10 decision to the Moose Jaw Miller Express Wednesday night at Athletic Park.

They now have the day off before hosting the Regina Red Sox on Friday.

Five Mavericks players have been named to the Western Canadian Baseball League East All-Star team for July 18 and 19 in Saskatoon.

They include Catcher Nate King, third baseman Carter Roth, outfielder Blake Dale, and pitchers Derek Archer and Tanner Hail.

King has a .329 batting average and has 14 runs and 10 RBI in 22 games.

Roth, in his second season with the Mavs, has a .438 on-base percentage, .375 batting average, 29 runs, 28 runs batted in, 15 doubles and 54 hits in 34 games.

Dale is playing in his third season with the Mavs, and his season at the plate has been strong with 41 hits, 16 doubles, six home runs and 35 runs batted in.

Archer is among the league leaders in pitching stats. He’s fourth in strikeouts with 42, his earned run average of 3.44 sits third, and with 36.2 innings pitched, he has been the seventh-most active pitcher in the league.

Hail, a reliever, has pitched 16.1 innings with two saves and 14 strikeouts. His earned run average sits at 4.96.

During Wednesday’s matchup with the Miller Express, the Mavs were fighting back from an early deficit.

Moose Jaw struck for five runs in the first inning off eight hits and a walk. They would strike for another run in the top of the second inning to make it 6-0.

The Mavs would strike for five runs in the bottom half of the second inning.

A Johnny Vulcano single was followed by ones by Nick Hill and Jahzeel Groetalares to load the bases. Adam Vulcano would then drive both his brother and Hill home for a pair of runs.

Then, with one out, a Blake Dale walk would load the bases once again.

Frankie Giacalone would hit a single and drive in both Groetelaers and Adam Vulcano. It was followed by Carter Roth hitting a single to drive in Dale and cut the deficit to 6-5.

After holding the Miller Express scoreless in the top of the third, the Mavs would take a 7-6 lead in the bottom half of the inning.

The leadoff batter, Groetelaers, was hit by a pitch. The next batter, Adam Vulcano, then hit a two-run home run.

The lead didn’t last long, as the Miller Express got three runs back in the top of the fourth inning to make it 9-7.

The teams exchanged a run each in the fifth inning. A solo home run from the Mavs’ Nick Hill would leave them trailing 10-8.

A six-run sixth inning for the Miller Express would expand their lead on the Mavericks to 16-8. Chris Franks and Eduardo Saenz would both hit home runs in the inning for Moose Jaw.

Looking to rally back from an eight-run deficit in the ninth inning, the Mavs were only able to score a pair of runs, as Johnny Vulcano hit a two-run homer.

Danny Retzlaff had a rough start on the mound for the Mavs, giving up eight runs and 11 hits before being pulled after two batters in the fourth inning. He was tagged with the loss.

Rowan Robinson, who came into the game with two outs in the bottom of the second, pitched 3.1 innings and earned the win for Moose Jaw.

The Mavs now sit at 15-18 on the season, and trail both the Miller Express and the Saskatoon Berries by six and a half games in the WMBL East Division Standings.
