Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education to expand First Responder Academy with new funding

Jul 8, 2026 | 7:23 AM

The Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education is expanding its First Responder Academy at Monsignor McCoy High School with a new paramedicine pathway.

A program aimed at preparing students for careers in emergency medical services.

The board announced on Tuesday it has received $500,000 in funding to support the expansion of the three-year program, which will combine academic coursework, hands-on training and dual-credit learning opportunities through Medicine Hat College.

The program was developed in collaboration with Emergency Health Services and Medicine Hat College.

It will allow students to be mentored by paramedics while working toward a Bachelor of Applied Health Science Diploma in Paramedicine.

Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education Deputy Superintendent Nick Gale said the funding will help create more opportunities for students.

“This funding helps us expand meaningful pathways for students to explore careers in paramedicine, earn post-secondary credits, and prepare for future careers in the emergency response field,” Gale said.

“It reflects our ongoing commitment to build programming that supports students by providing the experience and skills they need to succeed in their futures.”

Through the program, students will gain exposure to the paramedicine profession while completing coursework that can contribute toward post-secondary education.

The expanded paramedicine pathway will launch in September 2026 as part of the First Responder Academy at Monsignor McCoy High School.
