Medicine Hat City Council to hold a public hearing on land change, and decide on the donation of other land

The bylaw received first reading on June 15, and no written submissions were received ahead of the hearing.

Also up for discussion is a motion by Coun. Bill Cocks to send a letter on behalf of the Council to the government and two ministers, expressing concerns about any coal-related activity that may jeopardize watershed protection and drinking water security.

Last week, a related petition spearheaded by Taber-based musician Corb Lund fell short of the required signatures for a citizen initiative petition and was rejected by Elections Alberta.

Council will decide on the approval of a Strategic Plan for the City outlined for 2027-2030. The top priority listed is Fiscal Responsibility.

A decision on a land donation for an affordable housing project is on the agenda.

The Miywasin Friendship Centre plans to construct the Miywasin Senior Housing Project at 301 Spencer St. SE, seeking to acquire the land from the City.

The project would create up to 20 Indigenous Affordable Housing units on the property. The group has received grant funding for the build from both the federal and provincial governments.

It is being recommended that the City transfer $412,000 from Capital Reserves to the Land and Real Estate Department to compensate for the land’s market value.

Several information items are listed early in the meeting, including Annual Reports of the Medicine Hat Public Library and Unison.
