Jul 2, 2026 | 7:51 AM

The Medicine Hat Mavericks ended up playing a doubleheader in Moose Jaw on Canada Day against the Miller Express.

A contest originally set for Tuesday was postponed due to weather and made up on Wednesday.

The Mavs would end up winning the early game 5-2, despite not getting their first runs until the fifth inning.

Moose Jaw took a 1-0 lead after the first and extended it to 2-0 in the third inning.

Medicine Hat’s bats came alive in the fifth with a Johnny Vulcano double to start the inning.

He would later come in to score when Jahzeel Groetelaers reached on a fielding error and made it all the way to third.

Adam Vulcano would hit a single to drive in Groetelaers to put the score at 2-0 Mavs.

Blake Dale would later walk before Frankie Giacalone hit a three-run homer to extend the Mavs’ lead to 5-0.

Jackson Miles would get the win on the mound for the Mavs, giving up two runs in five innings pitched.

Tanner Hail threw two scoreless innings of relief for the Mavs.

Pitching all seven innings and taking the loss for the Miller Express was Jacob Glazener.

In the second shortened seven-inning game, the Miller Express would take a 7-4 win.

Like the first game, the Miller Express would score a single run in the first inning to make it 1-0.

The Mavs would tie things up at one in the third inning when Nate King would score on a Blake Dale ground out.

Things were looking good for the Mavs in the fourth inning when they struck for three runs to take a 4-1 lead.

A Carter Roth walk started the inning, Eric Calder would then hit a single, followed by a Johnny Vulcano single to load the bases.

Carson Chan would hit another single to drive in Roth.

Nate King would then single to drive in both Calder and Johnny Vulcano.

That would be all the Mavs would get as the Miller Express retired the next three batters.

The Miller Express struck for five in the fifth inning to make it 6-4.

They would add another run in the sixth inning to round out the scoring.

Westin Walls got the win for the Miller Express after throwing six innings, and Nathan Pisio came in and got the save in the seventh.

Derek Archer took the loss for the Mavs. He gave up six runs on five hits in 4.2 innings before JJ Harnett got the final out in the fifth. Julian Pokorny threw an inning of relief and gave up a run.

The Mavs have the day off on Thursday before heading to Lethbridge on Friday to take on the Bulls.

They return to Athletic Park to host the Weyburn Beavers on Saturday.

The Mavs now have 12 wins and 16 losses on the season. They are 7.5 games back of the Saskatoon Berries in the Western Canadian Baseball League‘s East Division and a game back of the Beavers for third place.

Medicine Hat’s Getz shines as Bombers beat Berries

The Brooks Bombers had a huge 7-5 win on Canada Day in Saskatoon over the Berries.

A major upset by the now 5-18 Bombers over a strong 18-7 Berries squad.

Infielder Matthew Getz, an 18-year-old from Medicine Hat, had a strong showing in his first start with the Bombers.

He was 2-for-4 at the plate with a run, a double, a stolen base, and was also walked.

Getz is an alumnus of the Medicine Hat Moose Monarchs and Vauxhall Academy of Baseball.

He had previously played in four other contests with the Bombers, but this was his first complete game.

Another Moose Monarchs and Vauxhall Academy of Baseball Alumnus playing for the Bombers this season is 18-year-old Kaleb Bozek. He is from Castor, Alta., and has been on the mound for two of the Bombers’ five wins this season.
