Jun 19, 2026 | 8:13 AM

The Medicine Hat Mavericks were unable to contain the Fort McMurray Giants’ offense on Thursday night.

The Giants took a 16-7 win at Athletic Park in the first of two games in two nights in Medicine Hat between the teams.

Early in the contest, both teams came out of the first inning with two runs each before the Giants opened things up with seven runs in the top of the second inning to make it 9-2. A lead they would not surrender the rest of the way.

The Mavs picked up a pair of runs in the bottom of the second to narrow the gap to 9-4.

A run in the third inning and another two in the fifth extended the Giants’ lead to 12-4 before the Mavs scored a run in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings to cut the deficit to 12-6.

Three runs scored by the Giants during the top of the seventh boosted their lead to 15-6, before the Mavs responded in the bottom of the seventh to make it 15-7.

The Giants would get a single run in the eighth to finish the scoring in the game.

Fort McMurray had three pitchers give up 11 hits in the contest and strike out 14 batters with four walks.

Medicine Hat’s pitching struggled for the most part, giving up 17 hits, with six walks and seven strikeouts.

Highlights for the Mavs pitchers included Jax Graham and Miguel De Jesus each giving up no runs while getting three outs.

The Mavs’ record drops to 7-11 on the season, and the Giants improve to 4-9.

Game time between the two teams on Friday is at 6:45 p.m.

The Mavs are wearing a special alternate jersey on Friday. They are bringing back the Baby Spreys jersey design for a second year. A social media post from the team says the jersey design celebrates Canada’s baseball history by combining elements from the country’s two iconic Major League teams, the Toronto Blue Jays and Montreal Expos. This includes numbers and cuff striping inspired by the Blue Jays, and shoulder striping and chest logo placement inspired by the Expos, with colours that blend the looks of both Canadian clubs.

A limited number of non-game-worn jerseys will be available for sale by the Mavs, with game-worn jerseys also available for purchase. The team will wear the jerseys during six home games this season, concluding on July 25, when the purchased game-worn jerseys can be taken.

The Mavs will travel to Swift Current on Saturday for a 5:57 p.m. contest against the 57s.

Then on Sunday, the Mavs are in Brooks for a 2:05 p.m. contest against the Bombers. The final meeting of the season with the Mavs’ closest geographical opponent.
