Three tornadoes touched down in the Medicine Hat area during a severe thunderstorm that moved through southern Alberta on June 16, according to a preliminary assessment tied to a regional damage survey.

The findings come from a joint review by Environment and Climate Change Canada and the Northern Tornadoes Project, following reports of hail, strong winds, heavy rain and tornado activity across the region.

For the Medicine Hat area, the survey identified two tornadoes that touched down in Tilley and another in Seven Persons, all currently rated EF0 on the Enhanced Fujita scale, the lowest rating, indicating relatively weak tornado strength.

The report noted the ratings remain preliminary and could be updated if additional information becomes available.

The first tornado near Tilley began at 2:51 p.m., about six kilometres south of the community, as a second Tilley-area tornado was recorded at 3:01 p.m., roughly nine kilometres southeast of the town.

A third tornado was confirmed near Seven Persons at 3:45 p.m. MDT, about four kilometres north of the hamlet.

Officials said the assessment was based on an on-site storm damage survey and that more information from the public could help refine the findings.

Environment Canada is asking residents with photos, video or firsthand accounts of severe weather to report it by calling 1-800-239-0484 or emailing storm@ec.gc.ca.

The agency stresses the report is preliminary and does not represent a final or complete storm record.
