The Medicine Hat Mavericks will host the Fort McMurray Giants for two games starting Thursday, after they split two games with the Beavers in Weyburn.

After a 10-0 win over the Beavers on Tuesday, the Mavs struggled in Wednesday’s contest, losing 5-0.

Designated hitter Eric Calder had the only hit for the Mavs in the game, as three Beavers pitchers combined for a one-hit shutout.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning, when one run came in as the Mavs tried to put out other runners. This was followed a little later by a two-run home run from the Beavers’ Ryan Dauphinee, which would end the night for Mavs starter Brandt Spencer after giving up three runs.

Dan Hinote would come into the game for the Mavs and get the final out of the inning, followed by a scoreless inning in the sixth.

With Jackson Miller on the mound in the seventh, the Beavers struck for two more runs to extend the lead to 5-0.

Dauphinee led off the seventh for the Beavers with a bunt single. He would later come in to score along with Joe Madill when Trevor Dale hit a double.

There was no scoring for the rest of the game.

The Giants are facing the Mavericks on Thursday and Friday for the only games between the two teams this season. They come into the game with a 3-9 record, sitting second-to-last in the Western Canadian Baseball League’s West Division.

The Mavs also sit in second-last place in the East Division with a 7-10 record, but are only a half-game back of both the Regina Red Sox and the Beavers, who hold third and fourth in the division.
