transforming discarded items into works of art

YMCA of Southeastern Alberta launched Trash to Treasure program

The YMCA of Southeastern Alberta is launching a new program, aimed at helping young people develop creativity and practical skills by transforming discarded items into works of art.

The program, called Trash to Treasure, is partially funded by the City of Medicine Hat and will guide participants through selecting and refurbishing their own piece of furniture over several months.

The initiative combines learning and hands-on project work, with each session featuring one hour of instruction followed by one hour dedicated to creating and restoring furniture.

“This program is all about creativity, confidence, and seeing potential where others might not,” Y Treasure Manager Jorden MacPhee said.

“We’re excited to give kids a space to learn, build, and take pride in what they create.”

The program begins July 5 and will run through nine weekly sessions during the summer, followed by four monthly sessions in the fall.

Participants will work toward completing their projects for a public showcase planned for Dec. 6, where family members and community supporters will be invited to view the finished creations.

Organizers say the program is designed to encourage imagination, build confidence and provide participants with practical skills while promoting the reuse of materials that might otherwise be discarded.

The program is free to participate in, and all supplies will be provided.

Weekly sessions will take place on Sundays from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. throughout July and August, with monthly follow-up sessions scheduled for September, October, November and December.

Registration is now open through an online form.
