Medicine Hat College (MHC) will celebrate the Class of 2026 at its annual convocation ceremony on Friday at Co-op Place.

More than 740 students have completed their programs, with over 530 expected to cross the stage in front of family, friends and members of the college community.

“Convocation is an important milestone for our graduates and a celebration of the knowledge, skills and resilience they have developed throughout their time at the college,” says MHC President Kevin Shufflebotham.

“We are proud of their achievement and confident they will continue to make a meaningful impact in their communities and beyond.”

As part of the ceremony, MHC will recognize several award recipients, including the Honorary Applied Baccalaureate Degree, the Governor General’s Academic Medal, Student of the Year and Instructor of the Year.

The Honorary Applied Baccalaureate Degree will be awarded to Dr. Reagan Weeks, superintendent of Prairie Rose Public Schools and an MHC alumna. The college says Weeks has spent more than two decades in education supporting student development and strengthening connections between K-12 and post-secondary learning.

Under her leadership, Prairie Rose Public Schools has expanded dual credit programming and introduced learning opportunities in trades, aviation and athletics.

MHC says those initiatives, developed in partnership with the college, have helped create pathways for students to gain practical experience and prepare for future careers.

In addition to her work in education, Weeks has contributed to community organizations, including the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society and the Beej Project.

The Governor General’s Academic Medal will be presented to Information Technology graduate Aiden King, who maintained a 4.0 GPA during his studies and received the Louise McKinney Award Scholarship.

He gained additional experience through a co-operative education placement with Auto-Star Compusystems, and he will continue his studies at the University of Lethbridge.

The Student of the Year award will go to Occupational/Physical Therapist Assistant graduate Gabrielle Hales.

The college says she balanced strong academic performance with her on-campus involvement, including the Rattlers women’s hockey team and the MHC media team. Hales will continue her education at the University of Calgary.

The Instructor of the Year award will be presented to Heather Stahl, Academic Chair of the School of Business and instructor in the Business Administration and Advanced Accounting programs.

Stahl is recognized for her practical, experiential approach to teaching, including establishing the college’s Tax Club and co-development of an internal accounting case competition. Students describe her as approachable and supportive, noting her commitment to student success.

MHC Convocation 2026 begins at 1 p.m. Friday at Co-op Place and will also be livestreamed at www.mhc.ab.ca/convocation. An alumni social will follow the ceremony on the concourse.
