South Saskatchewan River level and flow rate at Medicine Hat start to decline

Jun 5, 2026 | 1:35 PM

The water level and flow rate of the South Saskatchewan River at Medicine Hat started to decline on Friday, according to the government’s Alberta Rivers website

Both levels had steadily increased over the past week.

The water level increased from 2.34 metres on May 29 to a peak of 5.74 metres on June 5 between 1:30 a.m. and 4 a.m.

The flow rate had increased from 137 cubic metres per second on May 29 to a peak of 1630 cubic metres per second on June 5 at 1:15 a.m. That number was starting to decline as of 6:35 a.m. on Friday.

The City of Medicine Hat announced the temporary closure of some parks, boat launches and low-lying river pathways as a precaution due to rising river flow rates on Tuesday.

Officials said the measures were being taken out of an abundance of caution as water levels increased. At the time, they had not anticipated a risk of overland flooding or property damage.

Areas affected by the closures included Police Point Park, the Echo Dale Regional Park campground and all city boat launches, including those at Strathcona Island Park, Echo Dale Regional Park and Fire Station No. 1.

Several low-lying pathways along the South Saskatchewan River were also closed, including trails in Strathcona Island Park and the Harlow and Riverside neighbourhoods, and Echo Dale Regional Park.
