A special weather statement has been issued by Environment Canada, warning of significant rainfall in parts of Alberta.

The statement, issued at 11:53 a.m. on Friday, said rainfall is expected to begin Saturday night into Sunday, with totals of 50 to 90 millimetres likely across affected regions.

Environment Canada said some localized areas could see more than 100 millimetres.

The heaviest rain is expected across central Alberta and the foothills, where precipitation may be heavy at times.

The system is expected to persist into the work week before tapering off Tuesday night into Wednesday.

Officials are urging residents to stay up to date with the latest forecasts and consider postponing outdoor activities where possible due to potential impacts.

The Alberta River Forecast Centre is also advising the public to monitor current streamflow conditions and any potential flood risks, while motorists are being directed to check road conditions through Alberta 511 before travelling.

Residents are encouraged to continue following updates and alerts issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada as the system develops.
