Nominations now open for inaugural Arts and Culture Legacy Award in Medicine Hat

Nominations are now open for the City of Medicine Hat’s Arts and Culture Legacy Award.

The award was created in 2026 to recognize individuals in the community for their contributions and achievements to arts and culture.

Nominations for the award are accepted until July 15 each year.

“Medicine Hat has a rich arts and culture story, shaped by talented artists and dedicated community builders,” the City’s Acting Director of Community Development, Aaron Nelson, said in a statement.

“This award ensures those contributions are recognized, celebrated, and preserved as part of our community’s story. We invite the community to submit award nominations and help us honour these remarkable Hatters.”

The two induction categories for the award include artist and culture builder, with the City outlining the criteria.

Nominations for an artist can be from any discipline, and the individual has made outstanding contributions to the community or has received substantial recognition for their art beyond Medicine Hat.

Nomination for a culture builder is an individual who has made exceptional contributions to life and culture development in the community as champions, supporters, patrons, administrators, teachers and mentors.

Up to five inductees can be honoured each year; however, both categories may not be awarded annually based on nominations.

An Arts and Culture Legacy Award induction ceremony will be hosted by the City each year to honour the newest recipients.

Inductees will be recognized with a display at the Arts and Culture Legacy Gallery at the Esplanade Arts and Heritage Centre.

The first induction ceremony will take place in January 2027.

Nominations can be submitted on the Arts and Culture Legacy Award webpage, with additional information also available.
