Mounties arrest man with connection to Medicine Hat after break-in near Consort

May 13, 2026 | 10:18 AM

A 30-year-old man who resides in both Medicine Hat and Kindersley is facing numerous charges after a break-in at a rural business near Consort.

Consort RCMP say that on May 4, 2026, at approximately 6:30 p.m., they received information about a man, a dog, and a truck in a business location near Township Road 364 and Range Road 74, where no one was reportedly to be.

When Mounties responded, they located the individual and initiated a traffic stop.

The RCMP investigation led to the man’s arrest for break and enter.

Upon further investigation, Mounties found that the suspect had a Canada-wide driving prohibition, outstanding warrants from Saskatchewan, and was on numerous release conditions.

Jeffrey Joseph Proteau faces charges of a non-residential break and enter, mischief, driving while prohibited, and three counts of failing to comply.

An interim hearing was held, and Proteau was remanded into custody.

He is set to appear on May 15 in the Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer.

RCMP say a warrant extension was granted, and Jeffrey Proteau will be transported back to Saskatchewan for his outstanding charges there.

The Consort RCMP say they received support from the Coronation RCMP in this investigation.

“This is a great example of how Alberta RCMP police officers are observant while they respond in order to ensure Albertans are protected,” Consort RCMP Detachment Commander, Sergeant Jeremy Houle said.

“We work together with our surrounding detachments and interprovincially to ensure the safety of our citizens and businesses within our communities. Working in partnership and receiving support from our communities allows us to work better together.”
