Monsignor McCoy staff and the high school track and field team are hosting about 1,500 students over two days for the McCoy Mini Meet at Crescent Heights High School.

Students from six elementary schools in the Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education are competing in a variety of events, including running, throwing, and long jump.

On Tuesday, Grades 4 to 6 competed, and on Wednesday, students from Grades 1 to 3 will participate in the mini meet.

Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education students in Grades 4-6 competed during day one of the mini track meet at Crescent Heights High School on Tuesday.

Ryan Irving, principal at St. Francis Xavier, says that a couple of years ago, the McCoy Track and Field team asked them to participate in the event.

“Last year, we grew a little bit and went into three schools. And then this year, we ran an event that included all elementary schools within the Catholic division,” Irving said.

Irving says that the event includes students of all abilities.

“Especially those students who maybe aren’t academy students, they still get that opportunity to be out there in the beautiful weather and enjoying,” Irving said.

“For us, it’s Catholic Education Week. So this is a really important time for us to get together in the Catholic community, all the students, and get that chance to be together,” he added.

“We got lucky a little bit when we found out the date, and it actually worked out perfectly that we do get together and have this time together during Catholic Education Week. I think that would be a great idea to kind of gel that in future years to see if we can make that work in other years as well.”

The event offers students a chance to experience the track at Crescent Heights High School, potentially for the first time.

They also had a chance to watch some of the athletes from McCoy race at the end of the day on Tuesday.

“I think it was pretty neat to watch them race at the very end here, just to show them where that talent can lead one day,” Irving said.

“I think that’s probably impactful to a lot of those students.”

The event was spearheaded initially by former McCoy student Laine Gauthier.

Now a student at Medicine Hat College, he still helps with the coordination of the event.

Irving hopes to see the event continue for years to come.

“I think it’s just a great opportunity for all students in our elementary schools to get together and celebrate their faith, but also celebrate their talents on the field,” Irving said.

Students take the field on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
