St. Patrick’s School kicks off Catholic Education Week in Medicine Hat with annual community picnic

Students, staff and families gathered at St. Patrick’s School on Monday for a community picnic celebrating Catholic Education Week in Alberta.

Alberta Catholic Education Week runs from May 9 to 15 and is marked by activities in Catholic schools across the province.

St. Patrick’s School Principal Dwayne Unreiner said the picnic gave families and students a chance to connect outside the classroom.

“We don’t get enough time sometimes in our busy lives to connect. Being Catholic Education Week, it’s a good reminder that we’re blessed that we get to celebrate our faith,” Unreiner said.

The annual picnic brought together roughly 1,000 students, staff and family members throughout the midday event.

Unreiner said as the years go on, community participation continues to grow as more families become involved in school activities and faith-based events.

The school also recently hosted a mini-stick tournament featuring 27 teams, with proceeds donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Parents participated as goalies during the tournament, which Unreiner said reflected the school’s focus on bringing families together while supporting others in the community.

“One of the big things about our faith community is how can we also serve others,” Unreiner said.

Unreiner said the strong turnout at school events reflects the support families continue to show for students, teachers and staff.

“Whenever we ask our community to get involved, it’s like a rock concert, everybody just shows up,” Unreiner said.
