Recall petition targeting Cypress-Medicine Hat MLA Justin Wright is unsuccessful

Mar 25, 2026 | 6:10 PM

A recall petition targeting Cypress-Medicine Hat MLA Justin Wright has failed, falling far short of the required number of signatures, according to Elections Alberta.

Alberta’s Chief Electoral Officer, Gordon McClure, said in a release that the preliminary count of just 2,087 signatures collected in Wright’s riding was well below the 13,150 needed, or 60 per cent of ballots cast in the 2023 provincial election.

Wright said the results show the recall effort was driven by a small group pushing a partisan narrative and failed to gain broad support.

“If we looked at the numbers in the last general election, they had about 85 to 9,500 signatures. So even their own base didn’t show up to support them,” Wright said.

“It’s really disheartening that they would use taxpayer-funded processes like this that are meant to be there for folks that are in breach of the roles that they’re doing and in breach of public trust, and use it just as a political arm of their movement.”

Wright said he is proud of the work brought to Medicine Hat and plans to continue those efforts moving forward.

“Specifically, to the tune of over half a billion dollars in grants and investments that have come through the province and just into Cypress Medicine Hat. So I’m very proud of the work that’s been done,” Wright said.

“We’re going to continue to do the work and get out into the investment sphere to make sure Medicine Hat is front and centre, just as I promised we would do when I ran in 2023,” he added.

“Let me tell you, I have been blown away by the amount of support that has come in from residents of Medicine Hat on both sides of the political spectrum, who said that this was nothing but a means to damage the good work that’s already been done or to sow unnecessary discourse.”

Three other recall efforts targeting Justice Minister Mickey Amery and MLAs Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk and Ron Wiebe also failed to meet the threshold.

Amery saw 491 signatures counted, short of the 9,083 required from 15,138 ballots cast.

Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville MLA Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk had 1,167 signatures counted, below the 14,688 needed from 24,480 ballots cast.

As the Grande Prairie-Wapiti MLA Ron Wiebe had 279 signatures counted, well under the 11,921 required from 19,869 ballots cast.

Elections Alberta said verification stopped at the preliminary stage once it was clear none of the petitions had enough signatures to succeed under the Recall Act.

A separate petition targeting NDP MLA Peggy Wright was deemed invalid after it was not submitted before the 90-day deadline.
