Steel helps Stars with 10th straight by burning Flames 6-1

CALGARY — Sam Steel scored twice and added an assist as the Dallas Stars extended their franchise-record winning streak to 10 games with a 6-1 rout of the Calgary Flames on Tuesday.

Jamie Benn, Mavrik Bourque, Nathan Bastian and Wyatt Johnston also scored for Dallas (38-14-9). Matt Duchene chipped in with four assists giving him a team-best 17 points (eight goals, nine assists) during the winning streak.

Steel and Duchene both tied career-highs for points in a game. Steel’s 10 goals also ties a career-high. The 2016 first-round pick of the Anaheim Ducks also scored 10 times for the Minnesota Wild in 2022-23.

Owner of the NHL’s second-best record, the Stars began the night six points back of their division-rival Colorado Avalanche.

Casey DeSmith had 20 stops to improve to 13-4-5.

Dustin Wolf, pulled after giving up four goals on 17 shots, falls to 17-23-3. Devin Cooley made 16 saves in relief.

Leading 2-1 after the first period, the visitors blew the game open with four unanswered goals in the second beginning with Bourque’s goal at 2:26 and capped off by Johnston’s power-play tally at 19:41.

KEY MOMENT

Dallas opened up a 3-1 lead at 2:26 of the second when Jason Robertson’s point shot went off the glove of MacKenzie Weegar than deflected off the sweater of Bourque. Less than four minutes later, Duchene spun away from Weegar and set up Steel’s one-timer and that ended Wolf’s night.

KEY STAT

Johnston’s league-leading 21st power-play goal ties him with Brian Bellows (twice, 1987-88 and 1989-90) for second-most in a season in Stars franchise history. Dino Ciccarelli (22, 1986-87) has the record.
