Alberta Municipalities responds to Premier Smith’s televised address

Alberta Municipalities issued a statement on Friday following Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s televised address on Thursday.

Alberta Municipalities President Dylan Bressey and the board of directors said they watched the address, “to get a better sense of the provincial funding that may be allocated to municipalities in next week’s Budget 2026.”

“At one point in her speech, Premier Smith said that her government would limit increases in provincial spending in next week’s Budget 2026 and ‘focus it on building the schools, health facilities, roads, and other infrastructure needed to build a strong and diversified economy with a world-class standard of living.'”

Bressey said the summer villages, villages, towns and cities Alberta Municipalities advocate for urgently need more provincial funding than the Local Government Fiscal Framework (LGFF) provides.

“We agree with the formula, but the total amount of funding that is currently allocated to LGFF falls far short of our 264-member communities’ infrastructure needs. Inflation, population growth, and regular wear-and-tear on existing infrastructure are straining municipal budgets like never before,” he wrote in the statement.

“ABmunis shares Premier Smith’s belief that Albertans deserve good roads, clean water, safe bridges, schools and health facilities. Our question is this: How does the Government of Alberta intend to partner with municipalities to make sure the local infrastructure needs of residents and businesses are met in Budget 2026?”
