Over 1,000 teachers attending Southeastern Alberta Teachers’ Convention at Medicine Hat College

Feb 19, 2026 | 9:20 AM

More than 1,000 teachers are taking over Medicine Hat College on Thursday and Friday for the 2026 Southeastern Alberta Teachers’ Convention.

The Alberta Teachers’ Association said that these educators will choose from dozens of sessions to further their personal and professional growth in Alberta’s teaching profession.

The convention is Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Some of the speakers included in this years convention are Lisa Belanger, an expert in behavioural medicine, consulting and leadership, and Stuart Young, a councillor for the City of Medicine Hat and the founder of Cousins Skateboard Community.

According to the ATA’s release, Young’s rocky childhood led him to understand the value of creating supportive, inclusive environments where people feel seen, valued and empowered.

They add that his session will acknowledge the marked difference teachers make in their students’ lives.

The complete list of speakers and the schedule is available online.

Teachers’ conventions in Alberta are organized by teachers who voluntarily serve on convention association boards, with a mandate to improve and elevate teaching by exploring innovations in education, participating in professional development activities and discussing the topics facing today’s teachers.

The smallest convention in the province is the Southeastern Alberta Teachers’ Convention in Medicine Hat, with just over 1,000 delegates.

The largest is the Calgary City Teachers’ Convention, which hosts well over 11,000 delegates.

Each event is funded through teachers’ ATA fees.

At least one convention is held in the province every Thursday and Friday in February and early March.
