It’s the final weekend of January, where we make our way into February.

We can expect some moderate temperatures in the forecast.

Friday will be mainly cloudy with a high of 5 °C which is expected to remain into the evening, where it will be cloudy with a 40 per cent chance of showers overnight. Wind gusts up to 40 km/h are expected throughout the day.

Saturday is expected to be clear in the morning, with wind gusts up to 40 km/h and a high of 9 °C.

The evening is set to remain clear with a low of -5 °C.

Sunday will be sunny skies, a high of 8 °C, with cloudy periods in the evening and a low of 1 °C.

🎸Tongue on the Post Music Festival

FRIDAY and SATURDAY

The Tongue on the Post Winter Folk Music Festival began on Monday and will be concluding on Saturday.

Live performances are taking place inside Medalta Potteries.

There will be a combination of storytelling through history and raw, modern music.

Friday is the local Singer-Songwriter Night, kicking off at 7:00 p.m. with some of Medicine Hat’s greatest up-and-coming artists, along with a few fan favourites from over the years.

The artists include Jason Crooks, Brandon Thomas, Natalie Roberts, Brad Haas, Derek Gavey, Joy Bowyer, Jack Humeny, Kim Kramer, Netty Mac, Michael Shane, and Roots ‘n Boots.

The free event will be accepting donations at the door, but they aren’t mandatory.

On Saturday, the festival completely takes over Medalta Potteries for the entire day.

There will be four stages running, a Pancake Breakfast from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. by donation, and an evening Headliner Gala.

Side stages kick off at 11 a.m. and run until 5 p.m.

The cost will be $35 per ticket.

Side stage artists this year include Michael Bernard Fitzgerald, Derek Hintz, Amy Nelson, Carter Felker, Jenny Allen, Wheels, and more.

🦖TIC TAC Presents: Dino Night

FRIDAY

The Medicine Hat Public Library is hosting Dino Night for those aged 13 to 19 on Friday.

The event is a celebration of the Dino Fossil Pop-Up Exhibit from the Royal Tyrell Museum.

Those in attendance can expect dinosaur trivia, dinosaur crafts such as DIY felt dino nuggets, and a viewing of the original Jurassic Park film, and more!

Snacks and pop will be provided.

Doors are open between 6:45 and 7:15 p.m., then locked for your safety following.

The event ends at 9 p.m.

🎵 All Shook Up

FRIDAY and SUNDAY

All Shook Up is a musical comedy inspired by and featuring the songs of Elvis Presley.

The show at Crescent Heights High School Theatre has a live orchestra, dancing and singing.

Showtimes this weekend are Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m.

🏒 Medicine Hat Cubs

FRIDAY and SUNDAY

The Medicine Hat Cubs host their final two regular-season games this weekend at the Kinplex Arena.

The Carstar Okotoks Bisons are in the city on Friday night for a 7:30 p.m. contest.

This game will be the First Responders Appreciate Game, where all active and retired first responders receive free admission with a valid ID.

It is also Lids 4 Kids Night, where the Redcliff Youth Centre will sell limited edition Medicine Hat Cubs hats for $25, with all proceeds going to the Action Society for Youth.

Cubs captain Kyle Woolridge is also set to set a modern-era club record for games played with his 146th regular season game with the team.

Then on Sunday at 3 p.m., the Mountainview Colts from Didsbury will take on the Cubs.

🍫 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

FRIDAY and SATURDAY

Middle school students will perform Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at the Medicine Hat High School Arts Centre.

The show runs at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and tickets are available through School Cash Online or at the door.

🏋 YMCA Fitness Class Frenzy

SATURDAY

The YMCA of Southeastern Alberta is hosting a free Fitness Class Frenzy on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Ash Avenue Southeast location.

The registration deadline is Friday, Jan. 30, and a photo ID will be required to sign in.

The snake pit at Medicine Hat College will be busy this weekend with Futsal as the Rattlers host South Regionals for both the men’s and women’s divisions.

Five different schools will be in action, with a total of 16 games played.

Games begin Saturday at 9:30 a.m. and on Sunday at 9 a.m.

The Gas City Roller Derby Association has a pair of scrimmage sessions and a game this weekend at the Cypress Centre.

The two scrimmages will be hosted at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., with Gas City taking on the Jane Deeres for a match at 3 p.m.

🏊 Kinsmen Free Swim

SATURDAY

The Kinsmen Free Swim takes place at the Kinsmen Aquatic Centre in the Big Marble Go Centre on Saturday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Pre-registration is not required, but you have to check in at the front desk.

🐯 Medicine Hat Tigers

SATURDAY

The Medicine Hat Tigers host their Highway 3 rivals, the Lethbridge Hurricanes, on Saturday.

Game time is 7 p.m. at Co-op Place.

The radio broadcast on Wild 94.5, featuring Will Bryant and Lance Doll, starts both nights at 6:30 with the pre-game show.

The Tigers have beaten the Hurricanes in all three meetings this season.

🎙 Snowed in Comedy Tour

SATURDAY

The Snowed In Comedy Tour is back in Medicine Hat with a 7:30 p.m. show on Saturday at the Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre.

The biggest comedy tour in Canada has been operating for 17 years.

This year, travelling coast-to-coast across 70 cities with world-class comedy.

The lineup includes:

  • Dan Quinn – Just for Laughs winner and tour founder.
  • Paul Myrehaug – Great Canadian Laugh Off champion.
  • Pete Zedlacher – 6-time Canadian Comedian of the Year nominee.
  • Erica Sigurdson – beloved Debaters regular with over 70 appearances.

🎸 Live on the Cantina Stage: Reckless

Casa Amigos in Downtown Medicine Hat will host local Country, Rock N’ Roll and Folk Music band Reckless on its Cantina Stage on Saturday night.

The show gets underway at 8 p.m.

🍪 Sunday Fun Day

SUNDAY

Sunday Fun Day is a free event for people of all ages looking for some fun.

It’s hosted in the Gymnasium at Hillcrest Evangelical Missionary Church from 2 p.m. until 4:30 p.m.

Included at the event are bouncy castles, obstacle courses, snacks, a photo booth, crokinole, ladder golf and more.

🌺 Plants of Our Watershed

SUNDAY

The Medicine Hat Interpretive Program hosts part five of its Watershed Explorers series for youth aged six to 12.

Registration is required for this free program as space is limited.

Youths must be accompanied by an adult.

Plants of Our Watershed is all about the native plants that can be found in our area.

You will discover the role plants play in our ecosystem, learn some practical identification skills and talk about some of the traditional ways that people make use of plants.

A different aspect of the local watershed is featured each session, from the creatures that call it home, to water quality, native plants and more.

Participants will earn a different badge for attending each program and will win a prize for collecting all six.

These programs are made possible in part thanks to the Land Stewardship Centre of Canada.

Participants are encouraged to dress for the weather.
