Medicine Hat man charged with sexual assault, given probation after guilty plea to lesser charge

A 77-year-old Medicine Hat man who was originally charged with sexual assault in May of 2025 was sentenced in court on Tuesday.

Gerald Freedman was given a conditional discharge and probation for 12 months after a guilty plea to a lesser charge of assault.

The incident took place at a local golf course in the spring of 2025.

Freedman is known for his philanthropy in the city and was even announced as the winner of a City of Medicine Hat Civic Recognition Award in 2017.

He was also awarded a Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal in 2023 in recognition of his dedication to the Ronald McDonald House Charities in Alberta.

A publication ban is in place for any identifying information relating to victims or witnesses in this case.
