George Davison School has cancelled its Christmas Concert due to a respiratory illness outbreak

A statement from Alberta Health Services says a respiratory illness outbreak has been declared, causing the Christmas Concert at George Davison School to be cancelled.

George Davison School is not the only school in Medicine Hat being affected by illness.

An outbreak notice is in effect for Dr Ken Sauer Fine Art School, Medicine Hat Christian School, River Heights School, Crestwood STEM School, Ross Glen School and Herald School.

Respiratory Illness symptoms include:

A cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, loss or altered sense of taste and/or smell, nasal congestion or a runny nose, fever, which may also include fatigue, muscle ache and/or joint pain, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.

The outbreak is due to a cluster of students who are sick with these respiratory symptoms.

The germs that cause respiratory illness can be easily spread from one student to another through coughing and secretions from the nose and mouth.

AHS says children who are sick should stay home until symptoms improve and have been fever-free for 24 hours without medication.

Washing your hands frequently, proper coughing and sneezing etiquette, and regular cleaning of high-touch surfaces are also recommended by AHS.

Families are urged to keep routine, COVID-19 and influenza vaccinations up to date.

Testing isn’t routinely recommended but may be advised by a health-care provider.
