ASIRT determines officer used appropriate force in 2024 shooting of Medicine Hat man during standoff

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has concluded an investigation into a Medicine Hat Police Service shooting, causing the injury of a man with a mental health diagnosis.

On July 27, 2024, the police service received multiple 911 calls about a man discharging a firearm in an apartment building on the Southwest Hill in Medicine Hat.

Several officers attended this building, and negotiations with the man took place.

The events spanned multiple hours, and shots were fired by the man and returned by an officer.

Shots fired by the man hit two officers.

Tactical members arrived and later removed an injured man from the suite.

He was transported to hospital with gunshot wounds.

The investigation concluded that if it were not for proper tactics and some luck, the responding officers could have been seriously injured or killed by the man.

Adding that the officer who shot the man acted properly in the execution of his duties, the force used was proportionate, necessary, and reasonable in all the circumstances.

As a result, ASIRT said there were no grounds to believe an offence was committed by the officer.
