Medicine Hat man unknowingly broke law by displaying ‘for sale’ sign on his vehicle outside his house

Oct 23, 2025 | 3:03 PM

Medicine Hat resident John O’Connor was fined for displaying a ‘for sale’ sign on his vehicle.

O’Connor said the truck was parked on the street, violating City of Medicine Hat Bylaw 4346.

Section 23 under the bylaw states, no person shall park a vehicle on a roadway for the purposes of selling the vehicle, or advertising any product, service or business.

To avoid getting ticketed under this bylaw, police say residents need to ensure the vehicle is parked in their private driveway if there is going to be a for sale sign posted.

According to the Medicine Hat Police Service, this bylaw is to prevent a potential visual obstruction or distraction for drivers and to prevent neighbourhoods from becoming cluttered with advertisements.

Police say there have been 11 fines issued for this infraction from Sept. 1 to Oct. 14, 2025.
