Councilor candidate Reid wants more council communication in Medicine Hat

Medicine Hat councilor candidate Michael Reid will prioritize communication if elected.

Reid said it’s important to recognize when there is a lack of communication in the council.

“The left hand, in some cases, doesn’t know what the right hand is doing,” said Reid.

“So bringing that transparency, bringing everybody to the table to communicate, to make sure that when decisions are made, this is the best interest specifically for those groups that these decisions are going to make.”

Other priorities Reid will focus on is to increase productivity in the city, and the council being aware of spending costs.

“Right now, economic times are challenging. So right now is not the time for just frivolous, unaccountable spending,” said Reid.

“[Going forward I’m] wanting to make sure that we are being accountable to that. So making sure that when we look at projects and expenses that we have to take care of.”

Reid said it’s important to look forward instead of dwelling on past mistakes.

“[We need to] learn from them and then just say, we don’t need to discuss these problems anymore and let’s start talking solutions. So let’s bring these forward and let’s work together finding these solutions,” said Reid.

This is Reid’s first time running for council but he has developed skills with his career as a school teacher and through committees and boards he has been involved in.

“All those skills are transferable [to being on council]. And so as part of starting up my own business,” Reid said.

“I got involved with the Chamber of Commerce, the Southeast Alberta Chamber of Commerce, got myself welcomed onto a couple of committees. So one was the Downtown Collective.”

“The other one was the Health and Wellness Committee. And from there, I’ve been able to get involved, see how the Chamber works and interact with the city,” he added.

Two years ago Reid moved to Medicine Hat, Reid lived in Red Deer with his wife and four kids working as a school teacher for 20 years.

Reid said he moved to Medicine Hat because he was attracted to the city’s history and culture.

“It [Medicine Hat] is very welcoming, it’s very friendly, community feel. So those were some of the big qualities that stood out as being those highlights for what brought us here,” Reid said.

“Then obviously opening up our own business, we also had to see potential for growth, potential for us to be able to establish our business here, and we really feel that Medicine Hat can do that.”

When Reid moved to Medicine Hat, he opened a hot yoga studio and storefront with his wife.
