Medicine Hat council candidate Wason brings academic history experience to the table at upcoming municipal election

Troy Wason, 60, is originally from Calgary but has lived in Medicine Hat for over five years.

Ever since Wason moved to Medicine Hat, he has participated in volunteer work within the community. Wason opened a research business which he later turned into a paralegal and private investigative firm.

Wason is a historian and has been involved with the Historical Society of Medicine Hat and District, and he is also involved in the historical resources working group.

Wason has been involved with politics for just over 41 years and had been involved with the federal election of 1984 while attending the University of Calgary.

Wason has decided to run for council because of his enjoyment for municipal politics. Wason says he likes the hands-on process and how running for council affects people in their everyday lives.

Non-profits and public services are also very familiar to Wason. “It’s just been a part of my life. So I love local engagement,” he points out.

“I just love the feel of downtown [Medicine Hat],” he added.

With Wason moving to Medicine Hat from Calgary, he appreciates everything the new community has.

“I went to school there, [Calgary] and it was part of my life,” said Wason.

“This is a nice city in size. [Medicine Hat] there’s business, there’s different types of businesses. And yet, there’s one of everything,” he added.

With Wason having prior experience in politics and his knowledge of the current council, he said it’s a good mixture.

“I make decisions that I hope are based on information and research, and experience that I’ve had. But I’m certainly looking forward to what we can actually accomplish in the future,” said Wason.

“I think the intervention by the province and their report was a positive thing, and the fact that the council actually had brought it forward really puts us in a place where we can optimistically look, look forward to the future,” he added.
