Three Medicine Hat individuals charged with fraud and theft related to a scam
The Medicine Hat Police Service major crime unit has laid charges against three individuals following an in-depth investigation into a sophisticated “grandparent scam” that targeted seniors in the city.
On June 18, police said that the victims were contacted by individuals claiming that a family member was in legal trouble and required immediate bail money.
Believing the story to be true, the couple withdrew a substantial amount of cash from their bank. A courier was then arranged to attend their home and collect the funds in person.
After an investigation police arrested three individuals believed to be responsible for the scam.
