Medicine Hat Police warn of scam

Jul 14, 2025 | 7:00 AM

The Medicine Hat Police Service said they have received several reports of a scam circulating in the community where individuals are reporting receiving a text message from “Alberta Drive Safe or Safe Roads Alberta” stating the individual has an unpaid ticket from photo radar.

Police said the text will ask the recipient to “click on a link” to pay the ticket.

MHPS said this is a phishing scam, and if you do receive this text, do not click on the link, but rather just delete the text.

You will not receive a texts related to unpaid tickets from MHPS as they said this is not something they do.

Tickets are mailed to the registered owner address and payment and non-payments are dealt with by Alberta Courts and Alberta Registries.

Registered owners receive a notice of conviction to their address and overdue payments are attached to vehicle registration.

A person can confirm if they have a ticket by visiting https://traffictickets.alberta.ca.

Additional information on overdue fines and scam is available through https://www.alberta.ca/fines-enforcement-program.

Police provided a list of additional tips to protect yourself:

  • Photo radar tickets are mailed out to the registered owner of a vehicle
  • If no payment is received, the fine will be levied against the registration of the vehicle
  • Government agencies will not send out text messages with links requesting information or payment
  • If you receive an unsolicited text or email with a link attached, never click the link
  • If you think you may have an unpaid ticket, contact your local authority or registration center to verify
  • Do not provide any money or personal information
  • Delete the text or email right away

Anyone who has fallen victim to a scam can report it to the MHPS by calling 403-529-8481 and talking to an officer.
