Medicine Hat’s Kane-Rissling competing at Canadian Track and Field League finals

Medicine Hat’s Madison Kane-Rissling will be competing at the Canadian Track and Field League Championship today in Ottawa.

The 25-year old will participate in long jump for the Bears who drafted her this spring to the CTFL.

The CTFL founded in 2022, has approximately 280 athletes separated equally onto 4 teams, competing across 10 sports.

The season included six track meets allowing teams and individual athletes to accumulate points during the season to put them in position to compete for individual and team honours at the league finals.

The prize pool for the event is project to total $45,000.

Kane-Rissling said her first year competing in the league has been a really incredible experience.

“I went to my first prelim meet in BC at the beginning of June and got to meet some of the other athletes on my team and compete against athletes from the other teams and it was just really cool to be in that atmosphere and competing alongside those athletes,” Kane-Rissling said.

“I also had the opportunity to meet the CTFL media director and it was really cool being able to like practice and do a pre-meet together and kind of see like behind the scenes of what it takes to bring something like this together.”

Kane-Rissling said the league and it’s multiple meets are really good opportunities to compete and train alongside the other athletes.

“I’ve seen a lot of athletes come and go and I’ve competed all across Alberta and I think the CTFL provides a really cool opportunity to compete across provinces and see what other talent is out there,” Kane-Rissling said.

Since being drafted in late March, She said she has gained a lot of support from Medicine Hat.

“I’ve received a couple of sponsorship opportunities and even in-kind donations from the community and it just really shows what this league is doing for athletes and representing who they are and where they come from, which is really cool,” Kane-Rissling said.

“I’ve had the opportunity to work with those locally owned businesses to kind of show what Medicine Hat is made of, which is awesome.”

She is excited to see what the event is like in person and the results from that.

“This will be my first time competing at the Terry Fox Athletic Facility in Ottawa, which is really cool and it’s an amazing prep meet, this year at least, because the Canadian National Track and Field Championships at the end of July are also at that same facility,” Kane-Rissling said.

“This kind of gives a little taste of what the facilities are like there and to get me acclimated to the atmosphere.”
