Medicine Hat Mavericks send five players to All-Star game

The Medicine Mavericks will be have five players heading the Western Canadian Baseball League All-Star Game.

Representing the Mavs and the East Division at the contest in Okotoks will be infielders Carter Roth, Tyler Vanneste, outfielder Jeremy Freeman Jr. and pitchers Luis Diaz and Xander Roberts.

Heading into Friday’s game Roth leads the league in hits with 59, is tied for top spot in at bats with 146, sits in third place in the league in batting average .404.

Vanneste is eighth in the league for home runs with 6, and sits 13th in the league for hits.

Freeman is top spot in the league for triples with 3, second in the league with 17 stolen bases, second in runs with 39, third in playe appearance with 145, fourth in the league with doubles at 12, seventh in the league with hits at 47.

Diaz in 12 gams has started once with a 1-1 record, 4.36 earned run average and has 39 strike outs in 41.1 innings, with one save.

He has the second most innings pitched in the league, second most save, and sits seventh for strike outs.

Roberts has six starts in seven games, a record of 4-1, throwing 20 strike outs across 31.1 innings.

He is sits in third in the league for wins.

The All-Star game takes place on July 19 at Okotoks at 7:05 p.m. with the home run derby at 5 p.m.
