Over 1,000 free dresses offered in Medicine Hat to graduates in need

Liquid Concert and Event Venue has over 1,100 dresses available for anyone in need, after the community rallied together to help soon-to-be graduates after a local dress store left them without a dress last minute.

Donna Diment, organizer of the donations, said the dresses are all free, with the exception of a select few.

She said she just wants to make sure that girls who are graduating have a good experience, because they deserve it.

“It’s awesome. We had three girls come this morning and try on dresses, and just when they were leaving here with their dresses in hand, they were ecstatic,” she said.

“They were just giggling, and the feeling is- there’s nothing like it. It’s pretty awesome to be able to do that for them.”

Investigations are ongoing by police into management of Magic Moments after a series of reported unfulfilled orders, but the generosity of strangers have helped to continue to get dresses into graduates hands.

Diment said it’s a huge expense for parents to be able to allow their kids to experience ultimately where they want to be.

She said some kids can’t afford a dress with, at times, a $1,200 price tag — but that maybe they “shouldn’t have to” afford it.

She said the charitable organization Red Deer Elks, who promote and support community needs, donated most of the dresses, as well as members of the public.

Zaleakaloth, Zaleanaloth and Zinaloth Ian will soon graduate, and picked out their own dresses at Liquid Concert Venue on Monday.

“People are caring enough to give dresses away for free to people who couldn’t get a dress,” Zaleanaloth said.

“Or anyone that’s struggling,” Zaleakaloth added.

“[It’s] just very thoughtful, and nice,” Zinaloth also said.

Zinaloth said it was very much appreciated that people donated the dresses to those in need.

“I know some people can’t really afford [it], so this is kind of nice for those people that can’t afford expensive dresses.”

The dresses will continue to be distributed at Liquid Concert Venue until 7 p.m. Monday, and again from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday.
