The Western Hockey League announced Gavin McKenna has been named a finalist for the Four Broncos Memorial Trophy which is awarded annually to the leagues best player.

McKenna, the reigning CHL Rookie of the Year, had a stellar sophomore season leading the Tigers in goals, assists, and points, compiling 41 goals, 88 assists for 129 points in just 56 games.

The 2026 draft-eligible product is widely regarded as the consensus number one overall player for the 26 NHL draft and ended the 2024-25 season on a remarkable 40-game point streak, the longest such streak in the WHL in the internet era.

If McKenna were to win the award, he would become the first Medicine Hat Tiger to do so since Kris Russell earned the honor during the 2006-07 season.

Earlier on Thursday, Tanner Molendyk was named a finalist for the Bill Hunter Memorial Trophy, which recognizes the league’s top defenseman.

Molendyk was acquired by the Tigers in a blockbuster trade back on January 6th and compiled 47 points through just 49 games this season.

Molendyk was selected in the first round of the 2023 NHL Draft by the Nashville Predators and represented Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championships in Ottawa this past winter.

If Molendyk were to win the award, he would become the first Tiger to be named the league’s top defenseman since…Kris Russell, back during the same 2006-07 season he also won MVP.

The award winners will begin to be announced beginning on April 22nd and concluding on May 7th.
