Premier Smith says her approach ‘most effective’ after Canada spared from more U.S. tariffs

Premier Danielle Smith says her advocacy to remove U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods has been the “most effective” so far.

Canada was spared additional tariffs as U.S. President Donald Trump announced sweeping fresh levies today on many countries.

Canadian goods that fall under the Canada-U.S.-Mexico free trade agreement will continue under to be imported tariff-free.

“This is precisely what I have been advocating for from the U.S. Administration for months,” Smith said in a statement.

Smith calls for all of Canada to “focus on diplomacy and persuasion while avoiding unnecessary escalation.”

The premier has been criticized for her approach to U.S. diplomacy, particularly after meeting with right-wing podcaster Ben Shapiro.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s threats of adding a surcharge to electricity exported to the U.S. grid in March preceded an apparent breakthrough that saw trade war negotiations start.
