Police say $8,000 worth of illegal drugs were seized during a traffic stop in downtown Medicine Hat.

The vehicle was suspected of being involved in reported drug trafficking, police said Monday.

The stop last Wednesday led to the arrest of two people from Medicine Hat, police said.

During the investigation, officers seized fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, prescription pills, a bladed weapon, and Canadian currency from both individuals and the vehicle.

A 42-year-old woman and 46-year-old man, both from Medicine Hat, were charged with drug trafficking, possession of proceeds of crime and failure to comply with release order conditions.

The man received an additional charge for failing to comply with a probation order and possessing a prohibited weapon.

Both suspects were held for bail hearings and subsequently remanded into provincial custody.

The woman is scheduled to appear in provincial court on Monday and the man is slated for an April 3 appearance.
