The Medicine Hat Cubs have punched their ticket to the Heritage Junior Hockey League‘s South Final with a 5-3 win over the Agra Risk Wheatland Kings on Friday night.

Cubs forward Nolan Sutherland scored the game winner, firing home his second of the game with only 2:47 remaining in the contest to make it 4-3.

The shot from the side boards near the hashmarks fooled Kings goaltender Derrick Ford and gave the Cubs back the lead, after it had slipped away from them.

The near capacity crowd at the Kinplex erupted again, as forward Mason Osinski scored his second of the game on an empty netter with 1:05 remaining to seal the victory for the Cubs.

The Cubs had jumped out to a 3-1 lead with 11:27 to go in the second period on a Jacob Hazzard goal.

From there, the Cubs had seen the lead slowly evaporate, with the Kings battling back with a powerplay marker late in the second, and another just passed the midway point of the third to make it 3-3.

The Kings, gave the Cubs a tough physical game with a combined 150 penalty minutes throughout the contest.

The majority happening before the second half of the game, with only six minutes of penalties called after the mid point of the second period.

The Cubs after winning the series three games to one, will await the winner of the series between the Carstar Okotoks Bisons and the Cannex Cochrane Generals.

The Generals pulling out a 4-2 win Friday night to extend their series with the Bisons.

The Bisons hold a two games to one edge in the series heading to Cochrane on Saturday, with game five set for Okotoks if necessary on Sunday.

The South Final will begin next week.
