City of Medicine Hat finalizing carbon capture deal

Feb 24, 2025 | 5:55 PM

The City of Medicine Hat is finalizing a carbon capture and storage deal.

Imperial Oil Ltd. was revealed as the recipient of city-to-business talks that started last June.

The company will conduct feasibility work to determine if the geology is appropriate for permanent CO2 storage.

The city says Imperial, the Canadian affiliate of ExxonMobil, can leverage extensive global experience in carbon capture, transportation and storage.

Carbon capture technology aims to prevent harmful emissions from releasing into the atmosphere.

Today’s announcement marks another major move towards what could be Medicine Hat’s energy future.

Earlier this month, the city purchased a solar farm project.
