Tourism Medicine Hat chief says new economic plan recognizes ‘strength’ of southeast Alberta

Tourism Medicine Hat’s executive director Jace Anderson says a new plan to bolster the regional economy is proof that municipalities acknowledge the importance of tourism.

“This latest report affirms that our allies behind this initiative are economic development organizations who recognize the strength and potential in continuing to collaboratively grow our visitor economy,” Anderson said Thursday morning.

“Tourism Medicine Hat looks forward to continuing to promote and celebrate the incredible destination that is Southeast Alberta.”

A City of Medicine Hat-led plan to bolster the region’s economy launched Wednesday with a focus on talent attraction, business development and cooperation between its member municipalities.

Goals to position Alberta as the defense and aerospace hub of Canada, establish a protein processing plant and advocate for major infrastructure investments among the economic strategy’s 17 action items.

Three of the action pieces are tourism-related under the priority of boosting the economic impact of regional tourism offerings.

The strategy aims to “spark the developing of innovative tourism experiences, activities and events”, “develop and promote culinary tourism experiences” and “elevate the online profile of the region’s travel offerings.”

The city’s economic development lead Selena MacLean-Moore said the Southeast Alberta Economic Opportunity Strategy’s objectives will ultimately boost local employment.

“Jobs would definitely be an ultimate end goal when we can build our current industry and then also attract new (industry),” McLean-Moore told CHAT News.

Cypress County, County of Forty Mile, Town of Bow Island, neighbour Redcliff and the Village of Foremost have all signed on to the six-municipality strategy.
