‘Perfect opportunity to get outside’: Albertans are bundling up for ‘Winter Walk Day’

Feb 4, 2025 | 3:16 PM

Albertans will be bundling up and get active for Winter Walk Day on Wednesday to help promote movement even in the province’s coldest months.

Since 2006, on the first Wednesday of February, Albertans have donned their toques and boots to head out on a 15-minute walk either as an individual, with friends or family, or with classmates or coworkers.

“Winter Walk Day is the perfect opportunity to get outside, get active and enjoy the beauty of our Albertan winters,” tourism minister Joseph Schow said in a news release.

“I encourage you to join me in lacing up our boots, stepping outside and embracing the fresh air this Winter Walk Day.”

In 2024, the government says more than 146,000 Albertans participated in the event. This year, the province hopes to see that grow even higher.

Residents are encouraged to get involved by registering their office, school, family, or themselves and sharing a photo of their winter walk on social media using #WinterWalkDay.

Winter Walk Day is provided through a partnership between the Government of Alberta, Safe Healthy Active People Everywhere (SHAPE), the Alberta Motor Association (AMA) School Patrol, Ever Active Schools, Alberta Blue Cross, Fitness Alberta and the Alberta Recreation and Parks Association.
