Medicine Hat Tigers bring back goaltender Zahara through trade

Dec 12, 2024 | 1:25 PM

Goaltender Zach Zahara is back with the Medicine Hat Tigers after a trade with the Wenatchee Wild on Thursday.

The Wild is a 2027 4th round draft pick originally owned by the Moose Jaw Warriors.

The Tigers had previously traded Zahara to Wenatchee on Oct. 16 in a deal that sent the Tigers a 2025 8th round pick and the same 2027 4th round draft pick they traded to reacquire him.

Zahara, born in 2005, was originally drafted by the Tigers in the 8th round of the 2020 WHL draft.

He had played in 33 games for the club since the 2021-22 season, with a record of 16 wins, seven losses, three overtime losses, and two shootout losses.

During his time in Wenatchee this season Zahara tended the net in 11 games, with three wins, seven loss, a 4.05 goals against average, and a .884 save percentage.

Zahara, from Rocky View County, Alta. also played two seasons with the South Alberta Hockey Academy U18 Prep team from 2021-2023.

Tigers goaltender Jordan Switzer has been in net for each game since goalie Harrison Meneghin went down to injury on Nov. 20 in a game against the Prince Albert Raiders.

In a recent interview Tigers play-by-play voice Will Bryant had with general manger and head coach Willie Desjardins, Meneghin was expected to return to the Tigers net after the Christmas break.

The Tigers had Medicine Hat native Beck Boiteau, as the emergency back up goalie in their contest on Tuesday after sending 2009 born goaltender Cash Christie back his U18 Prep team with St. George’s School.

Boiteau had started the season with the WHL’s Everett Silvertips, before being sent to the AJHL‘s Whitecourt Wolverines.

The Tigers return to action Friday night with a game in Moose Jaw against the Warriors.

Puck drop on that contest will be at 6 p.m.

Will Bryant will have the radio broadcast on Wild 94.5 starting at 5:45pm.
