Medicine Hat Tigers blown out by Cougars

There are peaks and valleys to any hockey season for a team.

For the Medicine Hat Tigers on Wednesday night, it was definitely a valley as they dropped their only regular season meeting this season with the Prince George Cougars by a 8-1 score in front of a home crowd.

The Tigers actually got off to a strong start to the game early, outshooting the Cougars 10-2 early in the first period.

Cougars goaltender Joshua Ravensbergen was able to hold the Tigers at bay early, and throughout most of the contest.

Tigers captain Oasiz Wiesblatt got into a fight with Riley Heidt at the 5:25 mark of the first, and also ended up with an instigator penalty, and a ten minute misconduct on top of the five minute major.

The Cougars first goal came on an even-strength marker, when Aiden Foster drove towards the net and slid the puck out front to an open Matteo Danis, who put the Cougars up at the 11:10 mark.

A Liam Ruck hooking penalty at the 14:31 put the Cougars on the powerplay, where they scored their first of three powerplay goals in the game to go with a short handed marker.

The lone Tigers goal came in the second period on a nice cross ice pass from Mathew Ward to Shaeffer Gordon-Carroll down low, who made no mistake lifting one over the blocker of the Cougars goaltender.

That 2-1 score would be as close as the Tigers would get as the Cougars scored six unanswered goals the rest of the way.

When the Cougars scored their sixth goal at the 9:29 mark of the third period Tigers netminder Harrison Meneghin was replaced by Ethan McCallum who let in two more.

A number of penalties and defensive lapses throughout the contest, lead to the Tigers downfall.

The Tigers did outshoot the Cougars 34-31 in the contest, but gave up far more high danger scoring chances.

Missing from the Tigers were several regular players for the contest due to injuries and suspension.

With the loss, the Tigers snapped a three game winning streak and now sit at a 4-5 record heading into their Friday night game against the Warriors in Moose Jaw.
