Southern Alberta company fined for workplace death

A verdict has been handed down in court after an employee died on the job.

HTK Iron Works Ltd. plead guilty on October 2, 2024, to one count under the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act for failing to ensure the health and safety of a worker. The Crown withdrew four other charges.

On February 1, 2023, a worker at the company’s metal fabrication shop near Burdett died. They were struck by a fabricated windbreak panel that fell from a moving forklift.

HTK Iron Works Ltd. has been fined $360,000, inclusive of the 20 per cent victim fine surcharge.
