Medicine Hat Mavericks name new coaching staff

Oct 7, 2024 | 8:31 AM

A new coaching staff has been announced by the Medicine Hat Mavericks.

Joining the team for the 2025 will be head coach Jonathan Thornhill, who comes from Valley City State University.

Thornhill said that Medicine Hat stood out for several reasons as a baseball fanatic.

“You love hearing that its one of the sunniest cities in Canada. When you have beautiful weather, a great fan base and talented players from all over, it make for a great summer,” Thornhill said in a statement.

“I look forward to working with our coaching staff, the Medicine Hat organization and getting to know the Medicine Hat community.”

His assistants will be Ryan Reed from Mid-America Christian University and Cesar Rodriguez from Ottawa University.

Reed said he chose Medicine Hat because he sees this as a great opportunity to continue to grow as a coach.

“I don’t know too much about the league as a whole, but have been told it is competitive and Medicine Hat is a great organization to be a part of,” Reed said in a statement.

Rodriguez was a pitcher for the Mavs during the 2024 season.

He said he decided to come back to Medicine Hat as a coach because not only does he like the culture that’s been built, but the community is great and supports the team.

“It feels like my home away from home,” Rodriguez said in a statement.

“What I’m looking forward to as I transition from player to coach is hoping to be able to help players out however I can and just like last year, I want to win.”
