Top five things to do at the Medicine Hat Public Library in September

The library is a wonderful place to find new books, but there’s more going on than just flipping through pages.

Here are the top five things to do at the Medicine Hat Public Library for September 2024.

Drop-in Family Day

Sept. 8, 15, 22, 29 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

We’re returning to Sunday hours after the summer break and that means Drop-in Family Day is back this month.

Play in the Co-op Community Development Play Space, build with Big Blue Block, LEGO and dinosaurs and watch a family-friendly movie in the theatre starting at 2 p.m.

Creative Writing Workshop

Sept. 17 at 6 p.m.

The library will host an award-winning author who will share her writing wisdom in a creative writing workshop.

Jen Ferguson is the author of “Those Pink Mountain Nights” and “The Summer of Bitter and Sweet,” which won a 2022 Governor General’s Literary Award and is a 2023 Stonewall Honor Book, and has a PhD in English and Creative Writing.

Registration is required.

Memory Kits and Café

Sept. 20 at 2 p.m.

Memory Kits will soon be the newest addition to the Library of Things and the library is hosting a Memory Café to celebrate.

People with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia and their care partners are invited to try the items in the kits and visit with therapy dogs from Summit Service Dogs.

Registration is required.

Kom Mo Taan at Police Point Park

Sept. 27 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The library is hosting Kom Mo Taan at Police Point Park for people to recover from trauma and all its challenges.

Experience traditional Blackfoot face painting with Kainai Elder Charlie Fox and land acknowledgement teachings, in a meaningful cultural experience.

TIC TAC Presents: Bonmatsuri

Sept. 27 at 6:45 p.m.

Play traditional Japanese festival games like “suupaa boru sukui” — super ball scooping, “wanage” — ring toss, and “go” — board game to collect coins and earn prizes.

Make origami stars, enter an anime cosplay contest, watch a movie and eat a bunch of ramen.

For teens in Grades 7 to 12, up to and including age 19.

Doors open 6:45 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. only, then locked for safety.
