Three youth have been charged in the accident that led to the recent death of a Medicine Hat teenager, police said in a statement Thursday.

Emergency services responded to a motor vehicle collision late on July 18 at 10:30 p.m. that occurred at the intersection of Strachan Road Southeast and Spruce Way Southeast.

The 15-year-old was riding a moped travelling west bound on Strachan Road and was about to turn south bound onto Spruce Way before it was struck from behind by a west-bound vehicle.

Police said the operation of a separate vehicle was found to contribute to the cause of the collision.

The teenager suffered serious injuries during the collision and was transported to hospital for treatment. He later succumbed to his injuries.

As a result of the investigation, a male youth was charged with dangerous driving causing death, according to the Medicine Hat Police Service.

Two other male youths were charged with provincial traffic offences.

Alcohol was not a factor. However, aggressive driving was a primary contributor to the collision, police said.

Due to the age of the youth charged they can not be named.

“The Medicine Hat Police Service offers condolences to the family and friends of the youth who was killed during this tragic event,” police said.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time.”
