The 2024 Medicine Hat Open Tennis Tournament continues this weekend with the finals taking place on Sunday.

Ken Clement, manager of the Medicine Hat Tennis Club, said each weeknight has been host to about 10 matches with lots of excitement and excellent matches through a variety of categories.

“We’ve got open division men’s and women’s, and then we’ve got open division men’s and women’s doubles, and then we’ve got an intermediate men’s division in singles,” Clement said.

“We’ve got five different divisions.”

The tournament is filled with mostly local competitors, with a few from Brooks.

“Once in a while, we’ll get someone come down from Lethbridge, but it does tend to be a local tournament,” Clement said.

There are 50 players playing over the five-day tournament.

Clement said that two of the courts received an upgrade about a year ago.

“We were benefiting from a court renovation last year, where we put down what’s called plexi-cushion on our back two courts anyway, and it’s a special cushioned surface that promotes the long life of the courts, but also it’s a little easier on the feet and back,” Clement said

“It’s been very good on it. People enjoy playing on it, and it looks like it’s going to be the way to go in the future.”

Matches on Friday night will start at 5 p.m. and 6:15 p.m.

Saturday play begins at 8 a.m. going right through the evening.

The finals will take place on Sunday starting at 11 a.m., beginning with the women’s and men’s singles, followed by the doubles finals.
