Prison sentences have been handed down in connection to the treatment of a newborn in Lethbridge, Alta.

In July, a 33-year-old woman and a 39-year-old man each received sentences on different dates. In order to protect the identity of the young victim, the names of the two adults cannot be released.

The man will spend the next three years behind bars on one count each of failing to provide the necessaries of life and public mischief.

The woman has 349 days left on her sentence when accounting for time already served in custody. She was convicted on two counts of failing to provide the necessaries of life and one count of public mischief.

On November 27, 2023, Child and Family Services (CFS) requested police assistance after receiving a report that a three-week-old girl had been injured and had been taken to Chinook Regional Hospital.

The Lethbridge Police Service said the baby’s arm had been broken “as a result of significant force.”

Ever since CFS got involved, the child has not been in the care of the two people who were charged.
