Southern Albertans receive grants to protect historic buildings

A series of projects will soon get underway to repair and maintain historic local resources.

The Government of Alberta has announced $1.7 million in funding through the Heritage Preservation Partnership Program. It provides money to projects that preserve Alberta’s unique history.

Minister of Arts, Culture and Status of Women Tanya Fir says heritage conservation is an important part of maintaining Alberta’s unique character.

“These investments in our heritage will not only deepen our understanding of our shared identity, but help tell our stories for generations to come,” says Fir.

In southern Alberta, a total of $311,795 will go to 15 projects in six communities.

The largest grant, at $82,820, is being given to the Queen’s Hotel Restoration Corp. in Fort Macleod. They will use the money to replace the main roof of the hotel, demolish a structurally-unsound balcony, and strip, repair and repaint galvanized steel cornices.
