City of Medicine Hat opens application process for Canada Day organizer

Jul 10, 2024 | 2:51 PM

The City of Medicine Hat has opened its application process for a Canada Day organizer.

The city’s request for proposal offers an agreement for one year with an option to extend for up to four additional years.

The successful applicant will get a $40,000 budget from the city.

That marks an increase over previous years in recognition of escalating costs for fireworks, security and sanitation, city staff said.

The multi-year contract potential aims to create some stability that will allow an organizer to apply for additional funding from the Canadian Heritage Celebrate Canada program and maximize the event’s offerings.

The bid closing date is July 30.

The Canada Day request for proposal does not impact a popular July 1 skateboarding event.

The new Canada Day application process is separate from the Community Vibrancy Grant funding the Medicine Hat Skateboard Association secured for 2024 and 2025, meaning Beat the Heat will continue as is in 2025.

There were two public Canada Day festivals this year.

The first was organized by the skateboarding association and The Connection at Kin Coulee Park and another by the Medicine Hat Exhibition and Stampede.

There was some overlap of the two events on the afternoon of July 1.
