The City of Medicine Hat is holding a formal ceremony to mark National Indigenous Peoples Day on Friday.

The ceremony runs from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Helen Beny Lounge at City Hall.

It will include a blessing from Kainai Elder Charlie Fox, according to an event description.

Mayor Linnsie Clark will also about how the city is working to celebrate Indigeneity.

Downtown block party

Towne Square, free to attend

The theme of the weekly block party at Towne Square will be Celebrating Indigeneity this Saturday.

From 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., attendees can enjoy local Indigenous vendors, participate in story sharing, join a drum circle and watch a ribbon skirt fashion show.

Participants can also learn from Elder Charlie Fox about proper protocol when meeting an Elder, the significance of his headdress and the presentation of tobacco.

Teepee display

Kin Park, free to attend

The Saamis Employment and Training Association is hosting a National Indigenous Peoples Day celebration on Friday.

The event starts at 4 p.m. and will feature teepee displays, demonstration powwow, local drummers, metis jiggers, traditional dance, organizers say.
