Medicine Hat hit by new Bitcoin scam, police say

Jun 10, 2024 | 6:09 PM

There’s a new fraudulent scam circulating the Medicine Hat community, authorities say.

An unknown person claiming to be an employee of the city called a local business owner threatening to disconnect utilities due to a lack of payment, police and the city said Monday.

The unidentified caller told the victim to pay an “overdue” amount via Bitcoin, a popular cryptocurrency, according to a police news release.

The victim was also provided a 1-800 number to call that directed to a false City of Medicine Hat voicemail system with several prompts for various city departments, it said.

The city does not accept Bitcoin as a form of payment.

Anyone who has fallen victim to this scam, and has not already reported it to police, is asked to contact the MHPS at 403-529-8481.
